Early Christchurch Rediscovered

Situated along the city's oldest thoroughfare city is this remarkably unaltered "Superior Cottage" from the first era of settlement.

The proportions and design elements of the building suggest a construction date between 1862 and 1870. The roof would have originally been clad with Australian Hardwood Shingles.

Although without a veranda, this is a typical example of the type of house from the same era.

No DIY to worry about here...

Dunno about the cultural significance of that 1960s Hippie colour scheme though.

Would a building like this be protected from development in Christchurch? I'd hope so, but on experience I presume not. Seems to me that unless it was designed by Mountfort, the CCC lets you knock anything down and build a concrete dog kennel where it stood...

Christchurch is the only New Zealand city not providing any protection for its built heritage.

Even the cathedral could be demolished under the terms of the current legislation in this self-confessed "World Class City."
