Trends in Domestic Architecture

Here in Christchurch we might not yet be able to enjoy the standards of domestic architecture as epitomised by this suburan dwelling in the Slovenian city of Ljubljana, but on the other hand we do have this opposite end of the aesthetic spectrum (below), situated in suburban Merivale.

Is there a house under all that?? I know people like being close to nature, but...

Billy Connolly visited a family in Greenland who lived in a house built underground, covered in turf and lined in timber to recreate the Viking lifestyle of the raiders who visited their land (for the tourist $ of course).
Can one safely assume no Vikings dipped their toes in NZ waters and this is just natural insulation to save money on double glazing? :P

Hobbits, of course!

The Merivale house has the disadvantage of being extremely close to a widened road. The owners would therefore seem to have chosen a most appealing solution to the loss of their former privacy.

This could well be the earliest known example of the Godzonian Middle Earth architectural style :)
